The sun is the primary cause of melanoma. Also known as malignant melanoma, it is one of the most common types of cancer and can lead to death. With the quest for the perfect tan and families spending more time outdoors recreating, people are at greater risk for melanoma. Know that the best way to help prevent melanoma is to stay out of the sun. Continue with normal activities, but take measures to protect skin, especially if you love outdoor activities.

Seek shaded areas when possible, and avoid participating in activities during the middle part of the day when the sun is at its strongest. Cover up when you can if you don't have access to shade, and wear a hat to help prevent melanoma.

Apply sunscreen daily thirty minutes before going out. Know that while driving in your car and even on cloudy days, your skin is still exposed to harmful rays.

Use SPF 15 or higher sunscreen to help prevent melanoma. Reapply every few hours if swimming or if you have been perspiring. Protect children with sunscreen since they are most vulnerable.

Forget about sun beds and tanning booths. Say goodbye to tanning salons if you want to prevent skin cancer.

Eat healthy and include many green leafy vegetables and fruits along with lean protein in your diet. Take a vitamin supplement to promote overall health.

Note that cancer isn't ever completely preventable. Understand that cancer risk is something people must live with. Taking precautions, however, reduces chances of getting cancer, especially melanoma.
