Why does phlegm collect in my throat only while im sleeping?

Phlegm is a thick mucus that is produced in the respiratory system. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including allergies, colds, and sinusitis. While it is common to experience phlegm during the day, it can be particularly bothersome at night, as it can cause people to wake up feeling congested and irritable.

There are a few reasons why phlegm may collect in your throat only while you are sleeping.

Gravity

When you are lying down, gravity causes the mucus in your sinuses and throat to drain into the back of your throat. This can make it feel like there is more phlegm in your throat than there actually is.

Lack of swallowing

When you are sleeping, you are not swallowing as frequently as you do during the day. This can allow mucus to build up in your throat.

Dry air

The air in your bedroom may be drier at night than it is during the day, which can irritate your throat and cause it to produce more mucus.

Allergies

If you have allergies, you may experience more phlegm production when you are exposed to allergens, such as pollen, dust, or pet dander.

If you are bothered by phlegm while sleeping, there are a few things you can do to reduce it, such as:

- Use a humidifier in your bedroom to add moisture to the air.

- Elevate your head and shoulders while sleeping to help drainage.

- Drink plenty of fluids to thin out the mucus.

- Avoid lying down for at least 30 minutes after eating or drinking to prevent reflux.

- Use nasal saline spray to help clear mucus from your sinuses.

If your phlegm is severe or does not improve with home treatment, you should see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.
