Stage 0

For patients with Stage 0 esophagus cancer, the outlook is very good. The five-year survival rate with people diagnosed during this stage is greater than 95 percent.
Stage I

The five-year survival rate for individuals who are diagnosed with esophagus cancer during Stage I is between 50 percent and 80 percent.
Stage II

There are two types of Stage II esophagus cancer. With Stage IIA cancer, the five-year survival rate is between 30 percent and 40 percent. With Stage IIB, the rate falls to between 10 percent and 30 percent.
Stage III

If a patient is diagnosed with Stage III esophagus cancer, the five-year survival rate is between 10 percent and 15 percent.
Stage IV

During Stage IV of esophagus cancer, the cancer is likely spreading to other areas of the body. The five-year survival rate drops to less than 5 percent.
