What is satiation of a reinforcer?

Satiation of a reinforcer refers to the decrease in the effectiveness of a reinforcer over time or with repeated use. When a reinforcer is repeatedly presented without a sufficient break in between, the individual may gradually become less responsive to it. This can occur because the individual becomes habituated to the reinforcer and its initial novelty and attractiveness wear off.

Satiation of reinforcers can affect both primary reinforcers like food and water, as well as secondary reinforcers like praise or money. For instance, if you continually give someone candy as a reward, they may eventually lose interest in it and become less motivated by the prospect of receiving it.

Understanding the concept of satiation is important for effective reinforcement strategies. To prevent satiation and maintain the reinforcer's effectiveness, it is advisable to vary the type of reinforcers used, introduce them intermittently, and ensure there is an adequate delay between presentations to allow the individual's desire for the reward to build up again.
