The Characteristics of ADD in Females

Attention-Deficit Disorder, or ADD, has been studied predominantly in males. There are symptoms of ADD unique to women diagnosed with the disorder. Often not stated in the typical ADD literature, these symptoms wreak havoc in the day-to-day functioning of women with ADD. Many fight losing control as they try to keep up with society's depiction of the "superwoman."
  1. Overstimulation

    • Women with ADD may find their senses are overloaded easily due to being hypersensitive to noises, smells and touch. You may be extremely vulnerable to criticism that may stem from being a "good girl" throughout childhood. Women with ADD have difficulty with decision-making skills and become easily overwhelmed when there are too many choices.

    Personal Connections

    • When a woman with ADD is unable to get everything done on a daily basis, her self-worth may suffer as a result of the constant buildup on her to-do list. Emotions run high, especially during hormonal fluctuations. Women with ADD can hurt others by blurting out what is on their minds without thinking it through. You may have difficulties in your relationships and social life as it can be difficult for you to listen to others and form deeper connections.

    Cognitive/Physical Issues

    • If you are a woman with ADD, you may find that you tire easily or are hyperactive. Tasks that you consider boring may not get done, either at all or on time. Women with ADD may have poor handwriting, writing skills and math skills. Sleep and coordination problems are apparent in some. You may run late due to a poor sense of time. Difficulty remembering names and pacing yourself regarding responsibilities and activities also are common.

    What About Your Daughter?

    • If your daughter is unable to focus but is quiet and daydreams her way through school, she may be overlooked for a diagnosis of ADD or Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD. Many times, children who are impulsive, hyperactive and display aggressive behavior are the ones who are referred for help. They become obvious problems at school, in the home or society, and the family or school seeks help for them. Girls who struggle to finish a project due to the inability to focus and remain on task may not be getting their educational and emotional needs met appropriately.
