Boarding Schools for Children With ADD/ADHD

Boarding schools especially for children with ADD/ADHD can offer these children direction and structure. Families are sometimes unequipped to handle the challenges presented by their child's learning disability, so these boarding schools often help both child and family.

General Set Up

• Boarding schools especially for children with ADD/ADHD and other learning disabilities are intended to help them understand social cues and develop appropriate social skills. Exposure to frequent praise is another program component.

Academics

• Upon entrance to a boarding school, each student is assessed for their stated learning disability as well as for how the student learns most effectively. Each student is given an Individual Learning Plan (ILP).

Social Training/Activities

• Social cues and skills training is built into each day's activities. For example, during mealtimes, students are taught proper table manners, how to engage in polite table conversation and how to enjoy food in a socially acceptable way.

Faculty/Staff

• Faculty and staff who have direct contact with, and responsibility for, the therapeutic/academic progress of the children have specialized education and training. Life coaches are also staff members.

Certification

• Boarding schools should have accreditation and certification which indicates their programs meet state and federal standards. Parents must ask about accreditation at each boarding school they visit.
