Characteristics of Attention Deficit Disorder
The treatment of attention deficit disorder, or ADD, is 'multimodal' which simply means that an effective approach must include a combination of interventions. Modifications in the classroom and in the home are necessary for treatment to be a success, and in some cases medications may also be ordered by a physician. A structured environment and behavioral management are imperative.-
Identification

ADD is identified by the "Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders" (DSM-IV) as a psychological disorder that manifests itself in childhood.
Effects

The symptoms associated with ADD include an inability to focus or concentrate for lengthy periods of time, impulsive behavior, high level of distraction and overall inattention.
Features

Just because an individual has ADD, it cannot be automatically assumed that hyperactivity is involved. In fact, some with ADD have the tendency to be under active as well.
Etiology

Although there is not definitive cause of ADD, there are some environmental factors that are believed to contribute to its existence. Heavy metals, pollutants, food allergens, fungus and molds are all possible contributors to ADD.

More boys are diagnosed with ADD, and receive special educational services, than girls. Unfortunately, it is believed that boys may be more 'over represented' because the symptoms of the disorder are more prominent in boys than girls. While boys with ADD may act out, girls may become more introverted.
Potential

School age children who are diagnosed with ADD have a better chance of excelling if they receive special accommodations. Special education may include behavior management plans, shorter assignments, breaks in between activities, reviews and study guides.
Misconceptions

It is often believed that those with ADD do not have the ability to concentrate, but the truth is quite the contrary. It is a proven fact that if interest in a particular subject is peaked, an individual with ADD does have the ability to focus, even hyper focus.
