Psychologists & ADHD
ADHD, or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, may be diagnosed and treated by a pediatrician or family doctor. However, to ensure a proper diagnosis and to rule-out differential diagnoses, caregivers may want to consult a psychologist about the symptoms exhibited by their child. Psychologists can also determine if any co-morbid conditions exist.-
Function
-
A psychologist diagnoses and treats ADHD based on parent interviews, child interviews and psychological exams.
Significance
-
ADHD affects about 5 percent of all people and is characterized by an inability to sustain attention and control impulses.
Types
-
ADHD may manifest as mostly an inability to sustain attention or it may manifest as both an inability to pay attention and hyperactivity. Psychologists can determine which type of ADHD a child exhibits.
Identification
-
ADHD may be difficult to identify in some children. ADHD symptoms overlap with symptoms of anxiety, depression, dyslexia and learning disabilities. If proper psychological evaluations are not administered, ADHD may be misdiagnosed.
Benefits
-
The benefits of seeking a diagnosis from a psychologist include improving the likelihood of a correct diagnosis and acquiring assistance with obtaining school accommodations for the affected child.
