Activities for Hyperactive Children
Hyperactive children, or those who suffer from attention deficit hyperactive disorder, can sometimes be difficult to control. They have problems concentrating, react easily to stimuli and generally have a great deal of energy combined with a hard time controlling themselves. It's always a good idea to try and find activities that hyperactive children can participate in that will play to their strengths while at the same time teaching them discipline, focus and improving their social skills.-
Team Sports
-
One good activity for hyperactive children is team sports. The sport should be determined by the child, but some good examples are basketball, football, hockey and volleyball. The slow pace of baseball might be too boring for a child who's hyperactive. Joining a team sport that allows a hyperactive child to exercise and run around will help him burn off his extra energy, and at the same time it can help him bond with his peers through a shared activity. Sports also helps teach patience, control and discipline, which will be helpful lessons for a child with ADHD.
Individualized Activities
-
If your hyperactive child shies away from the competitiveness of team sports, or feels constrained by having to work with others, then it's best not to force her into participating. Instead you may want to find an individualized activity that she shows interest in. Martial arts and self-defense classes are one good idea: others are swimming, dancing and gymnastics. The kind of activity will depend on your child's interest, but the activities listed above also provide an outlet for excess energy, allow your child to interact with others and help build self-discipline and confidence.
Creative Outlets
-
Not all children who are hyperactive need a sporting outlet. Some of them may desire a more creative endeavor. For children who have an artistic streak, it may be a good idea to enroll them in painting or drawing classes. Some children who are hyperactive may be very socially inclined, and these children often do well as actors. For children who love to sing or who show an interest in learning how to play an instrument, musical instruction might be the thing. Whatever the child's interest, find a corresponding activity that he will enjoy and that he can throw himself into.
