How to Get Disability for ADHD

Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder, also known as ADHD, is a condition usually found in children and adolescents that is marked by inattention, impulsiveness, and hyperactivity. In order to meet the requirements for social security, the associated impairments previously listed must impair cognitive/communication functioning, social functioning, and personal functioning.

Instructions

    • 1

Request a claim form to apply for social security. Call your local or state social security office and request an application to be mailed to your address or pick one up in person.

    • 2

Gather supporting documentation. This includes medical findings with treatment notes from a doctor, mental health professional, and/or staff professional at a mental health facility; historical information, such as reports and evaluations; and standardized testing (achievement and IQ testing). Once you have completed your claim form and obtained all supporting documentation, file your claim for disability.

    • 3

Appeal if disability is denied. Most disability cases are denied at least once; however, during the appeal process most cases are won. Do not attempt the appeal process alone. Hire an attorney. Some attorneys have a policy that pay is not necessary unless the case is won. Also, by law there is a maximum that attorneys can charge if your case is won.
