What Works With ADHD/ADD Children in the Classroom?

Attention Deficit Disorder, or ADD, and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, or ADHD, refer to neurobiological disorders characterized by difficulty paying attention, distractibility, forgetfulness, fidgeting, excessive talking and difficulty remaining seated. Students with ADD or ADHD often have trouble in the classroom, but teachers and parents can take steps to help students with attention disorders succeed.
  1. Removing Distractions

    • Removing distractions can help ADD/ADHD students focus on their schoolwork. For example, seat students in the front row by the teacher's desk. Do not seat students near windows, air conditioners, doors or other distractions. Encourage students to only keep the books and materials they need for the current assignment on their desks. Allow ADD/ADHD students to wear earplugs during individual work, if desired, to block out sounds.

    Making Assignments Manageable

    • Break long or complicated assignments into smaller assignments to make them more manageable. Ask ADD/ADHD students to repeat instructions after they have been given to ensure comprehension. Make sure ADD/ADHD students have enough time to complete their work; they will likely require more time than other students.

    Giving Positive Reinforcement

    • Give ADD/ADHD students positive reinforcement whenever possible. For example, praise a student after he finishes the first part of a long assignment or after he raises his hand before asking a question. Younger students may benefit from a formalized system of rewards, such as a sticker for every day of good behavior.

    Working with Parents

    • Communication between teachers and parents is essential. Parents should inform teachers when students begin new medications or treatments, and teachers should regularly update parents on the student's progress in the classroom. If ADD/ADHD students tend to forget about homework assignments, teachers should inform parents of homework assignments. Parents also should also ensure that students have a quiet, uncluttered space at home that is only used for homework. For best results, have the student complete his homework at the same time each day.
