Is ADHD Hereditary?

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a condition affecting children and adolescents. Symptoms are typically broken down three categories: inattention, hyperactivity and impulsiveness, according to WedMD. The exact cause of ADHD isn't known, but there are theories.

Causes

• Researchers suspect heredity may play a role in causing ADHD. Other theories about what causes ADHD include chemical imbalance, brain changes and head injury, according to WedMD.

Parents

• ADHD is typically seen in families, which may suggest children inherit the condition from their parents. At least one third of all fathers who had ADHD in their youth have children who have ADHD, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center.

Relatives

• Children who have ADHD typically have one close relative who has the condition. The University of Maryland Medical Center says the majority of identical twins share the trait.
