Signs and Symptoms of ADHD in Males

A disorder that affects males two times more frequently than women, ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) can begin in early childhood and last into adulthood. The symptoms are generally the same for both men and women, with research studies primarily focused on male sufferers of this mental disorder. Knowing the symptoms will help you determine if you, or a male in your family, has ADHD.
  1. Inattentiveness

    • Failure to concentrate on one thing at a time and frequent careless mistakes in schoolwork or other tasks may indicate ADHD although by itself this can denote other issues. Moreover, a male with ADHD may not hear you even when you speak directly to him.

    Forgetfulness

    • Oftentimes someone with ADHD will have frequent memory lapses. A male with ADHD may constantly misplace and lose belongings, forget things learned recently and exhibit other behavior that appears "absent minded" to someone without ADHD.

    Excessive Movement

    • Fidgeting, shaking, jumping and moving about quickly often denote hyperactivity. When paired with symptoms, such as forgetfulness and inattentiveness, ADHD may be apparent. Males who have ADHD are more likely to be overactive and fidgety whereas females tend to be more subdued and inattentive.

    Considerations

    • Occasional bursts of hyperactivity and inattention appear normal in people from time to time; however, if symptoms that denote ADHD last longer than six months, getting a doctor's opinion is recommended, according to the Mayo Clinic.
