What Drugs Are Used for ADHD?

Being diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, can be a confusing time. Finding the proper treatment through a wide variety of medications does not need to be.

  1. Common Prescribed Medication

    • Ritalin, Dexedrine, Adderall and Cyclert, known as central nervous stimulants, are the most common medications that are prescribed for ADHD and ADD.

    Antidepressants Used for Treatment

    • Certain tricyclic antidepressants have been used for the treatment of ADHD and ADD, including Tofranil, Elavil, Pamelor, and Norpramin.

      Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, such as Zoloft, Prozac and Paxil, and dopamine agonists have also shown promising results in some ADHD and ADD patients. Effexor is also used in certain situations.

    Unconventional Drug Treatment

    • Beta blockers, used to lower blood pressure, are sometimes used in the treatment of ADD and ADHD. Anticonvulsants, such as Depakote and Tegretol, are another possible alternative.

    Warnings of ADHD Drug Treatments

    • Certain people may become addicted to central nervous stimulants, such as Ritalin, according to Dr. David B. Sudderth. In this situation, other drug options should be considered.
