Test for Attention Deficit Disorder in Children

Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, is a condition that effects the mind. ADHD can cause difficulty concentrating, excessive talking, disruptive behavior, and hyperactivity. There are several tests available to diagnose this condition in order that it may be treated properly.

• The testing techniques used to diagnose ADHD are evaluations. These evaluations test to see if the person meets the criteria for the condition. According to the Mayo Clinic, the criteria for ADHD must come from the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders.

Criteria

• The criteria for ADHD include hyperactivity, inattention and impulsive behavior. Each is associated with different symptoms.

Symptoms

• Some of the symptoms of inattention include failure to pay attention, difficulty organizing, losing things, being forgetful and being easily distracted. Hyperactivity and impulsive behavior involve talking excessively, running around when inappropriate, fidgeting and frequently interrupting.

• As ADHD can be a debilitating condition, there are many specialists available to diagnose and treat the symptoms of the condition. According to the Mayo Clinic, psychologists, psychiatrists, neurologists, family physicians and pediatric physicians can all test and diagnose ADHD.

Treatment

• Once ADHD is confirmed, treatment is usually started as soon as possible. Treatment includes medications that will lessen the symptoms of hyperactivity and the inability to concentrate. In some cases interpersonal therapy is also recommended to help the patient with social and behavioral skills.
