Functional Limitations of ADHD

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is typically a life-long condition that results in functional limitations both in school and in the work place. Function limitations may be mild or they can be quite severe, depending on the severity and management of ADHD symptoms.
  1. Distractibility

    • Those with ADHD are often functionally limited because of difficulties with distractability. Distractibility may interfere with completing tasks within the school setting and in the workforce.

    Concentration Difficulties

    • ADHD may cause concentration difficulties making completing academic or workplace tasks very difficult. When a task is eventually completed, mistakes may be present.

    Dependence

    • Those with ADHD may depend more heavily on supervision and instructions. They may not be able to function independently with success.

    Relationships

    • ADHD is often characterized by impulsivity, which may cause functional limitations. Impulsivity may lead individuals to make inappropriate comments to others and to have overactive emotional responses, resulting in an inability to work as part of a team.

    Overcoming Functional Limitations

    • Individuals with ADHD may benefit from a school or work environment that is free of unnecessary distractions. Also, those with ADHD may need instructions presented both orally and in written form.
