ADHD Disorder

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) can be symptomatic in both children and adults. The diagnostic criteria for ADHD includes having symptoms present prior to the age of seven. ADHD can interfere with daily functioning; however the condition can be successfully treated.
  1. Inattention

    • Losing things, poor listening skills, trouble focusing on one thing at a time, limited task completion, forgetfulness and lack of organization are all symptoms of inattention.

    Hyperactivity

    • Talking excessively, problems sitting still, difficulties remaining seated and feeling restless are all symptoms of the hyperactive component of ADHD.

    Impulsivity

    • Blurting out things at inappropriate times, acting without thinking ahead, poor planning and frequently interrupting other people's conversations are all symptoms of impulsivity commonly present in ADHD.

    Diagnosis

    • Diagnosing ADHD includes identifying impulse symptoms in addition to some of all of the symptoms of inattention or hyperactivity. ADHD can be diagnosed as the inattentive type (commonly referred to as ADD), the combined type or the hyperactive type.

    Treatment

    • Treating ADHD would include obtaining an evaluation from a mental health professional and considering options that may include medication and/or therapeutic behavioral interventions.
