Hyperactivity in children is something that every adult will most likely experience at some point in time. There has been a marked increase in the number of children who are being labeled as hyperactive. Hyperactivity is essential to recognize quickly as early intervention is key to minimize distress; however, we must be aware of what classifies as normal behavioral patterns and hyperactive behavioral patterns.

    Hyperactivity

    • Hyperactivity involves behavioral patterns that are often described by individuals as being in constant motion. Children with true hyperactivity will often display more motor activity all of the time, even while sleeping.

    Impulsivity

    • Impulsive behavior is the immediate unbridled reaction of an individual. This is often the behavior that takes place without premeditation, censoring or regulation.

    Behavioral Pattern

    • All people, even adults, will display inattentive, impulsive or hyperactive behavior from time to time. The key is to see if the behavior is long-standing patterns or a solitary instance.

    Causes of Hyperactivity

    • Not all children are hyperactive due to psychological problems. Some hyperactivity is a result of normal child behavior. Some hyperactivity may be due to being gifted, overwhelmed, bored and having family problems.
