Reactions to ADHD Medication
Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is condition that is characterized by an inability to focus. It is also characterized by hyperactivity and poor impulse control. ADHD is typically treated with counseling and medications. Stimulant medications are most commonly used to control ADHD. However, nonstimulant medications, anti-depressant medications and even some blood pressure medications may also be used. Reactions to these medications vary.-
Stimulant Medications
-
Stimulant medications include ritalin, daytrana, concerta, adderall and dexadrine. Common reactions to stimulant medications include poor appetite and problems with sleep. Other reactions to stimulants may include headaches and mood changes. Also, some individuals may become irritable when the medicine starts to wear off. In some cases, the medication may cause tics, but this usually can be alleviated by lowering the dosage. According to the Mayo Clinic, stimulant medications have been linked to some fatal heart problems. These heart problems usually occur in those individuals with pre-existing heart problems.
Nonstimulant Medications
-
Straterra is a nonstimulant medication prescribed for ADHD. Reactions to straterra include sedation, poor appetite and nausea. According to the Mayo Clinic, straterra may, in rare circumstances, cause serious liver problems. Signs of liver problems include yellow-colored skin, dark urine color and flu-like symptoms.
Antidepressants
-
Wellbutrin is a medication option that may be used when a patient has symptoms of both ADHD and depression. Reactions to wellbutrin include rashes, nausea and trouble sleeping. Another helpful anti-depressant is effexor. Reactions to effexor include increased appetite, sleepiness, dizziness, nausea, constipation and dry mouth.
Blood Pressure Medications
-
Catapres and tenex are blood pressure medications that may help with ADHD symptoms, especially impulsivity. Sometimes these medications may be used in combinations with other ADHD medications to reduce insomnia, tics and aggression. These medications may cause nightmares. They may also cause low blood pressure and sleepiness.
Serious Reactions
-
Serious reactions to any medication warrant emergency medical treatment. Serious reactions may include hives, chest pain, fast heartbeat, irregular heartbeat, fainting, severe headaches, confusion and seizures. If these symptoms occur, call 9-1-1 or go to a hospital emergency room right away.
