Does Medication Work for Adult ADHD?

ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is a mental condition characterized by a short attention span, excessive energy and a lack of focus. While often thought of as only a childhood disorder, this condition affects adults as well. About 2/3 of children with ADHD continue showing symptoms into adulthood. While some of the most effective treatment strategies for adult ADHD involve behavior therapy, some medications can also be effective.
  1. Medications

    • There are no medications that specifically target adult ADHD, but adolescent medications have been shown to be just as effective for adults. One category of these medications is stimulants. Popular stimulants include Ritalin, Adderall, Cylert and Dexedrine. Stimulants alter a biochemical process in the brain, helping the patient focus and lengthen his attention span. The effects of this type of medication are short-term, lasting several hours and then fading. The effects of stimulants on ADHD patients has been rigorously studied and documented, showing positive results within every age group. Two-thirds of adults with ADHD show significant improvement when given stimulants. Stimulants, however, come with the potential for substance abuse, as well as possible side effects such as insomnia, anxiety and headaches. One major medication for ADHD, strattera, is a non-stimulant. This drug is also highly effective, but avoids the potential pitfalls of stimulant use.

    Conclusion

    • ADHD medication has been shown to be effective for not only children but adults as well. Ask your doctor about which medications are right for your body and your lifestyle.
