ADHD & Allergies

There has been a lot of controversy regarding Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and allergies. Researchers and doctors have observed that certain foods cause allergies in ADHD children. Most of these allergies are cause by artificial flavors and other additives placed into the foods. Even foods containing sugar can aggravate the symptoms of ADHD.
  1. Chocolate

    • Many chocolate flavored foods contain artificial flavors. Look at the ingredients list for words like "vanillin" which is an artificial flavor and quite different from the naturally occurring vanilla. Stay away from these foods as they enhance the symptoms of ADHD due to allergic reactions.

    Food Dyes

    • Studies have revealed a strong connection between the increasing cases of ADHD and allergy to food dyes. Avoid foods containing color dyes like yellow 6 lake, red 40 lake and blue 1.

    Additives

    • Vitamins, juice, lipstick and toothpaste contain artificial flavors, colors and other additives that can cause allergic reactions and worsen the symptoms of ADHD.

    Sugar

    • Refined sugar can worsens the symptoms since it promotes hyperactivity in ADHD children. Hence, sugar is not recommended for ADHD children. Products like sucrose, dextrose and fructose also worsen ADHD.

    Solution

    • The only way to prevent allergies in ADHD children is to go completely natural. Organically grown products that are free from all chemicals and colors will help in reducing the incidences of such allergies, thus helping to control the ADHD.
