Focus Techniques For Children With ADHD

It can be difficult for kids with ADHD, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, to pay attention to anything for very long. While they do have a short attention span, it is possible for you to find ways to help them concentrate. Avoiding distractions, limiting lectures and walking them through a process with small steps are all techniques that can help kids with ADHD focus.
  1. Avoiding Distractions

    • ADHD makes it hard for kids to concentrate. The more that is going on in their immediate vicinity, the harder it is for them to pay attention to any one thing. If you want to help a child with ADHD focus on something, remove anything else that may be distracting. Turning off the television or radio, finding a quiet corner and putting all toys out of the way, should help him focus on what you are saying, or the task he needs to accomplish.

    Limiting Lectures

    • When you talk for too long, kids with ADHD are simply unable to pay attention for enough time to benefit from your lecture. If you need to explain something to a child with ADHD, get to the point quickly. Try to be as brief and clear as possible, if you want to keep her attention while you're explaining. In addition, involving her in the discussion turns the lecture into a conversation, which is more likely to help her focus on the subject. If she is not responding, and the discussion is losing her attention, you may have to wait until a quieter time and try again.

    Small Steps

    • If you want a child with ADHD to do something and they are having trouble focusing on the task, it is possible that it is too complex. You can help him complete the task by dividing it up into smaller, more manageable, steps. Successfully completing a difficult task will also improve his self esteem, encouraging and motivating him to focus on future tasks as well.
