ADHD Medication Options
Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is treated by either medications, therapy or a combination of both. Some of the medications used to treat ADHD may not be approved for that use and may be used off-label.-
Stimulants
-
Stimulants are commonly prescribed for the treatment of ADHD and are available in both long-acting and short-acting formulations. Examples of these stimulants include Ritalin, Adderall and Concerta.
Nonstimulants
-
Nonstimulant medications like Strattera are given when stimulant medications for ADHD are not effective or if the stimulants cause side effects.
Antidepressants
-
Antidepressants such as Wellbutrin and Effexor are not FDA-approved for the treatment of ADHD but are used when stimulant and nonstimulant medications don't work or if there is an additional condition such as a mood disorder along with ADHD.
Blood Pressure Medications
-
While not approved for this use, some blood pressure medications like clonidine and guanfacine are used to treat ADHD by helping with insomnia or any tics that may be caused by other ADHD medications.
Alternative Medications
-
Some literature suggests that alternative treatments such as vitamin or mineral supplements, herbal supplements or glyconutrients can treat ADHD but there is no substantial research to prove these claims at this time.
