Damaging Effects of Fluoride in Water & Other Chemicals
Fluoride is a chemical compound containing fluorine which is often added to municipal water systems to kill harmful germs and make it suitable for human consumption. However, this chemical can be dangerous to human beings if consumed on a regular basis.-
Fluoride
-
Fluoride is known to cause dental fluorosis. This is a defect of tooth enamel and is caused by fluoride's interference with developing teeth. One of its visible signs is mottled or yellowed teeth -- this happens mostly in young children. Also, fluorine may cause cancer. According to Fluoride Action Network, fluoride also causes brain damage. Fluoride Action Network notes that 18 studies have confirmed this in China, Mexico, India and Iran.
Chlorine
-
Chlorine is the second most dangerous chemical in our drinking water. Chlorine is added to water by water treatment facilities and is used as a disinfectant to kill or inactivate microorganisms that contaminate water. If chlorine is not well diluted when treating the water at the facilities, it can be very poisonous to human beings. A number of health problems have already been associated with the chlorine in drinking water. According to Henry J. Fishman, Consumer Affairs, chlorine can exacerbate symptoms in people who already suffer from chronic heart or lung disease. It also causes irritation to the nose, sinuses, lungs and skin.
Lead
-
Through corrosion of water pipes, lead makes its way into tap water. This problem cannot be controlled by the treatment plants as it occurs after the water has left the facilities. Lead poisoning is associated with damage to the red blood cells, kidneys and brain. To avoid this, you should drink filtered tap water.
Pesticides
-
Pesticides have been seeping into the underground water supply. They are associated with a number of chronic diseases and illness including headache, rashes, nausea, vomiting and eye and skin irritation. To prevent this, local governments are trying to keep the use of pesticides to a bare minimum.
