Allegra-D Precautions
Allegra-D is a non-prescription allergy medicine. It is sold in a 24-hour dose and a 12-hour dose and is designed to relieve allergy symptoms such as nasal congestion and pressure, runny nose, sneezing, and itchy and watery eyes. Before taking Allegra-D, it is necessary to review the drug's precautions and consult your physician if you have concerns.-
How it Works
-
Allegra-D contains fexofenadine, an antihistamine, and pseudoephedrine, a decongestant. Fexofenadine works to reduce the effect of histamine in the body, in turn reducing symptoms of sneezing, runny nose and itchy, watery eyes. Pseudoephedrine works to shrink the blood vessels in the nasal passages, thereby reducing congestion and sinus pressure. In addition to allergy sufferers, those with a cold may also use Allegra-D to relieve the cold's effects.
Pregnant Women, Children, and the Elderly
-
Pregnant women should only take Allegra-D when absolutely necessary and not until they have discussed the matter with their doctor. Nursing women should not take Allegra-D because the drug can enter breast milk. Children under the age of 12 should not take Allegra-D because of the risks associated with the drug's high amount of pseudoephedrine. Elderly individuals should exercise caution because they may be more susceptible to the drug's side effects.
Drug Interactions
-
Do not take Allegra-D within 14 days of taking an MAO inhibitor such as furazolidone (Furoxone), rasagiline (Azilect) or selegiline (Eldepryl, Emsam, Zelapar). If you are taking any other prescription drugs (in addition to an MAO inhibitor), check with your doctor to find out if they should be combined with Allegra-D. Consult with a doctor or pharmacist before combining Allegra-D with any other over-the-counter cough, cold or allergy remedy, which could lead to an overdose of a particular ingredient. Nonprescription antacids containing aluminum or magnesium, and herbal remedies containing ephedra, can also be problematic. Limit alcohol consumption while taking Allegra-D.
Medical Conditions
-
A doctor or pharmacist may recommend complete avoidance of Allegra-D or recommend an alternate dose if you have kidney disease, glaucoma, diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, a thyroid disorder, urinary problems or an enlarged prostate.
Side Effects
-
Nausea, dizziness, nervousness, trouble sleeping, headache, dizziness or dry mouth are all potential side effects of Allegra-D. Seek medical advice if these side effects get worse or persist. More serious side effects include irregular or fast heartbeat and tremors. Seek medical help immediately if you suffer seizures or mood changes, or have an allergic reaction that includes rash, itchiness, dizziness or trouble breathing.
