Why Aren’t My Allergies Improving?
1. Incorrect diagnosis
If you are taking medication for the wrong allergy, your symptoms will not improve. Allergies can look or feel the same, even if they are triggered by different things. For example, hay fever (pollen allergy) can produce similar symptoms to a dust allergy. If the type of allergy is not identified correctly, the best treatment will not be used, and symptoms will not get any better.
2. Not taking medication as prescribed
This is a common reason for ongoing allergies. If you forget to take your medication or you do not take the correct dose, your allergies may return.
3. You are still being exposed to the allergen
This can happen if you are living in an area or spending time with substances that are triggering your allergies. For example, if you have a pollen allergy and you are not using an air filter indoors, you may be inhaling pollen that came inside on your clothes or shoes.
4. Too much allergen in the environment
Even if you are taking allergy medication as prescribed, you may not get relief if there is just too much allergen present. For example, if you have a pollen allergy and the pollen count is extremely high, you may still experience symptoms.
5. Medication doesn’t work for you
Not everyone responds well to all medications. Some people may need to try different treatments before finding one that works effectively for them.
If you are still experiencing allergy symptoms after taking medication, talk to your doctor. They may recommend adjusting your treatment plan or trying a different medication.
