How to Prepare a Neti Pot With Himalayan Salt

The Neti pot is a small pot typically made from metal, glass or plastic that contains a spout and is used to administer a nasal lavage. Nasal irrigation, or a nasal lavage, is a procedure where warm salt water is flushed through the nasal and sinus cavities to relieve excess pressure. Neti pots rely on gravity to move the saline solution through the nasal passages. Using Himalayan salt in your Neti pot may increase the effectiveness of the irrigation because it does not contain any additives.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill the Neti pot to just below the top rim with water. The water can be warm, but make sure it is not too hot -- you do not want to burn your nasal passages.

    • 2

Add 1/2 tsp. of Himalayan salt to the water. Mix the solution until the salt is completely dissolved.

    • 3

Lean over a sink. The sink will catch the draining contents. Position your head so that you are looking down into the middle of the sink.

    • 4

Grasp the Neti pot in your right hand. Insert the spout of the pot into your right nostril. The spout should be inserted until it forms a tight but comfortable seal.

    • 5

Tilt your head so that your right nostril is located directly above your left. This can be accomplished by looking at a nearby wall. Your forehead should be slightly higher than your chin to give the solution a direct path through your nasal passages. Proper head positioning is crucial to the success of the nasal cleansing.

    • 6

Lift the pot until the solution begins to enter your nostril. Breathe only through your mouth. Do not breathe through your nose or snort the solution, as this will cause it to be pulled down your throat and possibly into your lungs. The solution will run into your right nostril, through your sinus cavity and out your left nostril.

    • 7

Empty the pot fully. Place one finger over your right nostril so that the canal is occluded and blow any excess solution out of your left nostril. Place your finger over your left nostril and blow excess solution out of your right nostril.

    • 8

Repeat Steps 1 through 7, but this time insert the pot into the left nostril.

    • 9

Clean the Neti pot after you have finished using it to prepare it for the next use.
