What causes an overbite?
Overbites are usually caused by a combination of genetics and other factors. Some of the most common causes include:
* Genetics: Overbites are often inherited, and the likelihood of developing this condition is higher if you have a family history of it.
* Jawbone irregularities: The overbite can occur when the upper jaw (maxilla) is too large or the lower jaw (mandible) is too small, resulting in the upper teeth extending out over the lower teeth.
* Overcrowded teeth: Overcrowded teeth can also cause an overbite, as the lack of space in the mouth can cause the teeth to become misaligned.
* Oral habits: Certain oral habits, such as thumb sucking or prolonged use of a bottle, can also contribute to the development of an overbite.
Other underlying conditions, such as tumors, cysts, or traumatic injuries, can also cause overbites.
