Why do people get fever blisters?
Fever blisters, also known as cold sores, are small, painful blisters that form on the lips, mouth, or nose. They are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV). There are two types of HSV: HSV-1 and HSV-2. HSV-1 is the most common type and usually causes oral herpes, while HSV-2 usually causes genital herpes.
Fever blisters are contagious and can be spread through contact with the fluid from the blisters. They can also be spread through contact with saliva or skin that is infected with the virus. Fever blisters are most contagious when they are first appearing and when they are oozing.
People can get fever blisters for a number of reasons, including:
* Being exposed to the herpes simplex virus for the first time
* Having a weakened immune system
* Being under stress
* Having a fever
* Being exposed to sun or wind
* Experiencing hormonal changes
Fever blisters usually go away on their own within a few weeks. However, there are antiviral medications that can help to speed up the healing process and reduce the pain.
