How to Read an IgE Allergen Report

Immunoglobulin E antibodies are part of the body's natural defenses against foreign substances. Antibodies attach to the invading substance or disease so that the rest of the immune system can destroy it. Present in the lungs, skin and mucous membranes of the human body, IgE antibodies are responsible for immediate onset allergies, such as anaphylactic reactions to substances like nuts or molds. An IgE allergen report shows what, if any, foreign substances have recently triggered a hypersensitive IgE response. Learning to read an IgE allergen report helps you understand your allergies.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the format of your report. Look for whether the lab presents the results graphically or using absolute numbers. Determine whether the different allergens are reported from top to bottom or from left to right.

    • 2

Read across each line or column to determine what the numerical or graphical value is for each allergen tested. Look for a reference range if the values are numerical.

    • 3

Compare the values. Identify which allergens produced IgE responses significantly higher than the other allergens. Assess any reference range or guide provided on the report for a more accurate sense of how sensitive your antibodies are to the particular allergen.

    • 4

Mark the allergen as a substance you are most likely allergic to if the IgE response was significantly elevated. Mark the substance as an allergen you most likely do not have an allergy to if the IgE response was not elevated or did not respond.
