How to Reduce the Density of Allergens

In the United States, 34.1 million Americans suffer from asthma and 40 to 50 million Americans suffer from indoor allergies. Many of the allergens that cause these illnesses and symptoms, including molds, pollens, dander and dust mites can be found inside your home. Six out of 10 are exposed to pet dander on a regular basis and eight out of 10 are exposed to dust mites. Minimizing the density of allergens begins inside your home with a few changes to your regular routine.

Instructions

    • 1

Keep your doors and windows closed. While the nice weather invites most people to open the windows, this also invites the pollen indoors. Keeping the windows closed and using air conditioning minimizes the pollen and also reduces dust mites because the humidity has been reduced.

    • 2

Vacuum your carpets at least once or twice a week using a vacuum with a HEPA filter to reduce the dust the vacuum cleaner puts into the air.

    • 3

Dust all surfaces in the house on a regular basis. Use a damp cloth or polish to allow you to collect the dust rather than just disperse it into the air.

    • 4

Wash all bed sheets once a week in hot water to kill dust mites. Place decorative pillows or items that cannot be washed in an airtight container for at least 48 hours to kill dust mites.

    • 5

Use a dehumidifier to control the humidity in your home. The more humid your home is the greater chance you have of mold spores. Reduce moisture levels in areas with water, such as the kitchen and bathroom. Reduce the amount of household plants because the soil is a breeding ground for mold. Consider silk plants instead.

Install an air purifier or use a tabletop version with a HEPA filter to help remove allergens from the air. Change air filters on a regular basis.
