1
Blow your nose to remove occasional excess mucus. Rather than living with post-nasal drip and a runny nose, excuse yourself occasionally to blow your nose and make yourself more comfortable.
-
2
Take over-the-counter antihistamine, expectorant or decongestant products. Make sure you follow product instructions while taking. These products thin inflamed membranes, break up and reduce mucus and make breathing easier when you're experiencing a problem with excess phlegm.

3
Avoid dairy products and cold drinks, both of which commonly cause excess mucus production. Spicy foods also cause an initial increase in mucus, but they do have a thinning effect on it which makes it easier to expel from your system.

4
Undergo allergy testing. Excess mucus in your nose, throat and lungs can be caused by dietary, seasonal or other types of allergies. See your physician and ask if allergy testing may be appropriate in your case.

Use a Neti pot to thin and remove mucus. A Neti pot is a small pot with a handle and spout that holds a saline solution to clear mucus that clogs the nasal passages. Follow the instructions that come with your Neti pot to prepare your salt water; and learn the appropriate technique to pour the solution into your nostrils and remove mucus.
