Ways to Stop a Nose From Running

A runny nose, also called rhinitis or rhinorrhea, can have many different causes, including allergies, infections or spicy foods. It is a common problem and usually not serious, although having a runny nose can be very uncomfortable and inconvenient. Symptoms sometimes clear up on their own but for some causes, runny nose treatment is required.
  1. Thinning Nasal Fluids

    • Nasal discharge may become thick, and mucous may run down the back of the throat and cause throat irritation. Postnasal drip may also cause coughing. Another complication of mucous buildup is that the tube between the nose and the ear can become clogged, leading to an ear infection. Keeping mucous thin helps prevent further complications. To help thin nasal fluids, drink plenty of fluids and increase the moisture in the air with a humidifier or vaporizer. Saline spray may also give some relief.

    Medication

    • If your runny nose is caused by allergies, you may need allergy treatment or medication. Antihistamines can help relieve runny nose and sneezing. Some antihistamines may cause drowsiness. Nasal decongestants can help reduce congestion in the nose. Over the counter nasal sprays can provide some relief but should not be used for more than three days.

    Nonallergic Rhinitis

    • If you are suffering from a nose that continues to run for no apparent reason, you may have nonallergic rhinitis. Causes of nonallergic rhinitis include dust, smog, strong odors, temperature changes, infections and stress. Certain medications may also cause runny nose, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and beta blockers. According to the Mayo Clinic, treatment of nonallergic rhinitis includes decongestants and nasal sprays. Complications such as deviated septum may be treated with surgery.

    Natural Remedies

    • Some natural remedies may help with a runny nose. Saline rinse or neti pot can be used to rinse nasal passages. Regularly blowing your nose can help remove irritants. Breathe in moist air from a warm shower. You may want to use a humidifier when you sleep. Avoid caffeine, because it may cause dehydration and aggravate dripping nose, according to Mayo Clinic.

    Runny Nose Symptoms

    • You may need to call your doctor if your runny nose is accompanied by certain other symptoms, such as fever. If the drainage is any color other than white or yellow, or if your runny nose symptoms begin after a head injury, you may need to see a doctor. According to Medline Plus, if symptoms persist longer than three weeks, call your doctor.
