How to Get Rid of Dander

According to the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, nearly 10 million American pet owners are allergic to their pets. Even if you suffer from allergies or asthma, you don't have to give up your relationship with your pet. Taking steps to eliminate or reduce pet dander in your home will help your whole family breathe easier.

Instructions

    • 1

Bathe your pet often. Giving Fido or Fluffy a bath once a week can reduce the amount of dander and saliva on their skin and in your home. If bathing often is not a convenient option, try wiping your pet down with an unscented, hypoallergenic baby or pet wipe to reduce dander and shedding. It's also a good idea to wash your pet's bedding every time you bathe your pet to further control the allergens in your home.

Vacuum regularly. You can keep pet dander and other allergens under control with regular vacuuming. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America website recommends wearing a dust mask while vacuuming to reduce your contact with carpet allergens that may get kicked up into the air. Also vacuum rugs, furniture and bedding to remove as much pet hair as possible.

    • 3

Invest in an air filter. Using a high efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filter can help remove more pet allergens from the air. Adding a HEPA filter to central heating and cooling systems is highly effective at reducing dander and other allergens in the home, according to AAFA.org. For best results, also use vacuums with HEPA filters.

    • 4

Confine pets to one area of the house. Keep pets away from areas you or other allergy sufferers frequent, such as the living room and bedroom. Any items with a textured surface such as throws and pillows can attract dander, so don't let pets near furniture or bedding.

Wash hands frequently. If you are allergic to your dog or cat, you don't necessarily have to avoid contact altogether. Be mindful not to touch your face, eyes or mouth after petting, bathing or playing with your pet. Wash your hands thoroughly after touching your pet to reduce the spread of allergens to your eyes and nose.
