What Are the Symptoms of Mild Cat Allergies?

The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America claims that 10 million people in the United States suffer from cat allergies. Most are actually allergic to Fel d1, a protein in cats' saliva, feces and urine. This allergen triggers a response from the immune system when someone who is allergic breathes it in or comes into contact with it. Their body releases certain chemicals, such as histamine, which lead to various cat allergy symptoms. Eyes

• When cats groom themselves, the Fel d1 protein transfers to their coats. As their coats shed, cat dander is released. The dander doesn't just fall to the floor or your furniture -- it stays in the air, where it can come into contact with your eyes. If you suffer from cat allergies, this contact irritates your eyes' delicate membranes. They may turn red or begin to itch. They may also tear up more than normal. The Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America says that with mild allergies, it may take days after exposure to the cat for symptoms to appear.

Nose

• Breathing in cat allergens can irritate the membranes lining your nose and nasal passageways, making them swell. After coming into contact with a cat or being in an environment where a cat is normally present, your nose may become runny, stuffy or itchy. An increase in sinus pressure is also common.

Respiratory

• Cat allergens that reach your lungs cause combine with antibodies, according to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. For people with mild cat allergies, this causes sneezing, coughing and wheezing. People with more serious reactions may have problems breathing. Long-term exposure to cat allergens may cause chronic asthma.

Skin

• A cat that licks you transfers Fel d1 to your skin, causing an allergic reaction. Some people experience reddening and swelling of the skin while others may experience rashes. Breathing in cat allergens can also cause a skin reaction. A rash may appear on your neck, upper chest or face. This is less common in people with mild cat allergies.
