What Is a Dust Mite?

A dust mite is a tiny relative of the spider that eats dead human skin cells which make up a large part of household dust. The feces and dead bodies of dust mites can cause allergies in humans, according to the Mayo Clinic.

  1. Allergies

    • The protein in dust mite products induces the formation of antibodies, which in susceptible people can trigger inflammation in the respiratory tract and possibly chronic asthma.

    Risk Factors

    • Dust mite allergy can be inherited. Young adults and children are more likely to develop symptoms, and early exposure increases risk, according to the Mayo Clinic. Following diagnosis by allergy testing, treatment ranges from allergy shots to corticosteroids, antihistamines and decongestants.

    Environment

    • Dust mites thrive in carpets, bedding and upholstered furniture. Controlling dust levels by regular cleaning and washing bedding, as well as keeping humidity levels between 30 percent and 50 percent can help reduce symptoms.
