Signs & Symptoms of an Allergy to Cows Milk

An allergy to cow's milk can happen to anyone of any age but is most commonly seen in children and infants. Although rarely life-threatening, a cow's milk allergy can still produce some painful or frustrating signs and symptoms. If you have a child you suspect may have an allergy, or you yourself have symptoms, learning the signs and symptoms of an allergy to cow's milk can help you discover if you are suffering from it.
  1. Skin Reactions

    • Hives is one sign that you may have a cow's milk allergy. If you notice red lumps beginning to form on your skin or near your lips after drinking cow's milk, chances are you are allergic. Other kinds of skin reactions can include red or white rashes that can be dry and cause intense itching.

    Digestive Reactions

    • A stomachache can be a sign from your digestive system that you are allergic to cow's milk. If you have a stomachache after consuming milk, and especially if it eventually leads to you throwing up, see your doctor, who can help assess whether the cow's milk is the culprit.

    Respiratory Reactions

    • Respiratory problems, such as a dry cough or a stuffed-up nose, can be part of an allergic reaction to cow's milk. On a more serious note, anaphylaxis, a swelling or closing of the air passages that can lead to death, can occur, although it is rare. Should you begin to have problems breathing, head to a doctor or hospital immediately.

    Baby's Reactions

    • Crying after eating is a symptom of a cow's-milk allergy that babies can exhibit. Since babies can't tell you when they may be feeling symptoms like an upset stomach, they will use crying to let you know. If you notice your child has any of the previous symptoms or cries following every feeding, he may have an allergy, and you should see your pediatrician.
