What Are the Symptoms of Reaction to Mold?

Mold is a type of fungus that may be found in our homes, schools and work places. It is especially common in areas that are exposed to moisture and contain organic material. Mold may grow in or around closets, washing machines, sinks, air conditioning units, basements or garbage cans. Exposure to mold can cause various reactions in a person.

According to the New York State Department of Health, you may also have difficulty breathing or begin to wheeze. Your lungs may not work as well as usual. You might have a runny nose and general irritation in the nose and throat.

    Effects on Blood

    • According to the Allergy Relief Center, stachybotrys, also known as black mold, is toxic. The center warns of several allergic reactions to this type of mold that involve loss of blood. A person who is reacting to toxic mold may cough up blood or have nosebleeds or a pulmonary hemorrhage, in which there is serious bleeding from the lung. Some people also become anemic. These symptoms mean you should get medical help immediately.

    Skin and Eye Problems

    • Some people get skin rashes, hives, itching and scaling. Eyes may become itchy, watery or red. The New York State Department of Health says some sufferers may mistaken think they have hay fever, as the symptoms are similar.

    Other Effects

    • Symptoms may also include dizziness, forgetfuless, memory loss and headache.

      Gastrointestinal symptoms can range from nausea to vomiting or diarrhea. Because these can deplete necessary moisture and nutrients, you should drink plenty of water and contact a doctor.

    • The Allergy Relief Center warns that black mold is potentially fatal. Thus it is important for anyone who believes he may be experiencing a reaction to mold, toxic or otherwise, should contact a medical professional. This is especially true is the person is experiencing symptoms that involve loss of blood, such as a pulmonary hemorrhage.
