A stuffed up nose is something that everyone has to deal with sometime in their life. A stuffy nose can happen for many reasons. The nose can get clogged because of an illness such as the flu, a cold or a sinus infection. Or, the nose can clog up from allergic reactions to a substances in the environment, such as pet dander or pollen. A stuffy nose can be quite uncomfortable, and can interfere with everyday activities. There are ways to unclog a stuffed nose that are safe and easy for anyone to try.

      Use a nasal-irrigation system or a nasal syringe and warm salty water. Fill a cup with 8 oz. of warm water, and add 1 tsp. of table salt. An extra option is to add 1 tsp. of baking powder. Mix the solution thoroughly. Pour the mixture into the nasal irrigation device, or fill the syringe with the solution. Tilt your head to one side, and place the tip of the nasal-irrigation device into the upper nostril. Flush the nasal cavity with the saltwater mixture by pouring the water out of the irrigation system, or by pushing the plunger on the syringe. The solution will flow through the cavity and out the lower nostril. Tilt your head to the other side, and repeat the process.

      A hot beverage like tea can help unclog a stuffed up nose

      Drink plenty of liquids. Water consumption is important for many reasons. Water helps the body stay hydrated, and keeps nasal mucous loose. Hot beverages, such as tea, helps because of the steam.

      Use a vaporizer or an air humidifier. These devices increase the amount of humidity in the air. More moisture in the air aids to loosen the mucous that is clogging the nose.

      Steam from boiling water can unclog your nose

      Create steam, and breathe it in through your nose. Steam loosen mucous and makes it easier to unclog a stuffed up nose. Create steam by turning on the hot water faucet, or boil a pot of hot water on the stove and breathe in the steam. Place a towel over your head to contain the steam.

      A warm, wet washcloth can loosen the mucous in your clogged nose

      Place a warm wet washcloth over your nose and eyes. Breathe in the moisture from the wet towel to help loosen the mucous.

      Vacuum regularly. Nasal irritants, including pollen, pet dander and dust get trapped in carpet fibers. If you're allergic to these environmental substances, vacuuming several times a week removes irritating pollutants.

      Wash any bedding materials frequently to avoid a clogged nose

      Clean your sheets and other bedding regularly. Airborne nasal irritants settle into your bedding and you inhale them as you sleep.
