Signs & Symptoms of Human Allergies to Dogs

Those who suffer from dog allergies often display one or more physical symptoms in reaction to contact with a dog. Because the symptoms are similar to those caused by many other allergens, it may be helpful to have a physician make a conclusive diagnosis.
  1. Coughing and/or Wheezing

    • Dog allergies can cause sufferers to have trouble breathing, ranging from slight to severe.

    Red and Itchy Eyes

    • Dog dander may irritate an allergy sufferer's eyes, especially if she touches her eyes after touching a dog.

    Stuffy or Runny Nose

    • Much like seasonal allergies, dog allergies can cause stuffiness in sufferers. Often, the mucus produced as an allergic reaction is thin and clear, as opposed to the thick or opaque mucus that often accompanies a cold.

    Sneezing or Itchy Nose

    • Dog-allergy sufferers may feel the need to itch their nose or sneeze several times in a row.

    Skin Reaction

    • Some people with dog allergies, especially more severe cases, may develop a rash if licked or nuzzled by a dog. Also, some people break out in hives when in contact with a dog.
