Information on Loratadine

Medications containing the generic drug loratadine are used to combat various symptoms associated with allergies and hay fever that arise from contact with certain airborne substances, such as dust and pollen. The drug is also taken sometimes to relieve symptoms of hives, which include itching and redness. Although loratadine provides temporary relief from related symptoms, it does not actually cure allergies, hay fever or hives.
  1. Function

    • Loratadine is part of the category of drugs called antihistamines. Such medications prevent the biological substance called histamine from functioning normally and producing symptoms witnessed in allergies. The symptoms that histamines cause include itchy eyes, an itchy and/or runny nose and sneezing.

    Types

    • Loratadine is available in tablet, syrup and quickly disintegrating form. The last version is a tablet that dissolves quickly when placed in the mouth on the tongue. Brand name versions of loratadine include Alavert and Claritin, both of which are available in several formulations for different users (for example, Claritin RediTabs for adults and fruit-flavored Claritin syrup for children) and in different strengths (for instance, 24-hour versus 12-hour) and drug combinations (for example, Alavert with loratadine only and Alavert Allergy & Sinus with loratadine and the decongestant pseudoephedrine sulfate).

    Side Effects

    • Loratadine is capable of causing a variety of side effects. Mild side effects include diarrhea, difficulty sleeping, dry mouth, headache, nervousness, nosebleed, sores in the mouth, stomach pain and weakness. Users should seek medical assistance if any of the problems do not clear up or become severe.

Serious side effects of loratadine that require immediate medical attention include difficulty breathing, hoarseness, itching, problems swallowing, rash, wheezing and swollen ankles, arms, eyes, face, feet, hands, legs, lips, tongue or throat. If any of these dangerous symptoms occur, users should also stop taking loratadine immediately.

    Considerations

    • Since loratadine may cause drowsiness, users should remain cautious when performing activities that require remaining alert, such as driving. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should speak with their doctor before taking loratadine, and all users should avoid taking more than the recommended dosage. Store loratadine out of children's reach and in its original packaging, which should be tightly sealed. Avoid exposing the medication to excessive moisture or heat, such as in a bathroom.

    Warning

    • Individuals who take loratadine to treat hives (for instance, Claritin Hives Relief) should be aware of symptoms that indicate anaphylaxis, an allergic reaction. The symptoms include dizziness, drooling, a swollen mouth or tongue, lost consciousness and breathing, speaking and swallowing difficulty. The condition requires prompt medical intervention and possible treatment with a prescribed epinephrine injector.
