Mildew Allergy & Itching

The white to bluish-green layer that mold deposits on food, shower stalls and other surfaces is referred to as mildew, according to the University of Georgia's Cooperative Extension Service. Mildew may cause more than aesthetic problems. Some people develop allergic reactions that include itching.
  1. Allergies

    • People prone to pollen and dander allergies may develop mildew allergies, says the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA). Allergies occur when the body reacts abnormally to mold and mildew.

    Respiratory Symptoms

    • People with a mildew allergy often develop respiratory symptoms. Sneezing, wheezing, runny noses and congestion are common symptoms of mildew allergies, according to the AAFA.

    Skin Symptoms

    • Some people also exhibit skin problems. Scaly skin, rashes and itching commonly occur among people who have touched mildew, according to the Illinois Department of Health.

    Prevention

    • To prevent an allergic reaction, remove mildew stains as soon as possible by using soap and water, or a bleach solution (1 cup of bleach added to 1 gallon of water), according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). People with mildew allergies should stay inside when mold counts are high outside, adds the AAFA.

    Treatment

    • According the Mayo Clinic, antihistamines like loratadine (Alavert, Claritin) and diphenhydramine (Benadryl) may relieve allergic reactions like sneezing and itching. Physicians can also prescribe medications like fexofenadine (Allegra) to relieve symptoms.
