Products to Kill Dust Mites

Dust mites occur everywhere and in massive numbers. This can be bad news for those who suffer from indoor allergies. Dust mite byproducts, such as feces and eggs, are one of the leading causes of indoor allergies. Fighting an invisible enemy in such great numbers may seem like an impossible task. Fortunately, there are things that can be used throughout the home to reduce these allergens and give much-needed comfort to indoor allergy sufferers.

  1. Hot Water

    • Many allergists will inform sufferers that washing affected linens in hot water is one of the easiest ways to eradicate dust mites. The water must be at least 130 degrees F for the dust mites to be killed. In addition to bed linens, it's recommended that curtains be washed in hot water at least once per week.

    HVAC HEPA Filters

    • HEPA filters are essential items for those who suffer from indoor allergies. Installing these specialized filters for your central heat and air unit can remove 99 percent of airborne particles as small as 0.3 micrometers. HEPA filters can be found at most hardware and home improvement stores.

    Powdered Cleaning Compounds

    • Boron is a naturally occurring element that has long been used to control insect populations. Boric acid, or borate, is currently being crafted into a powdered compound that is effective in eliminating dust mite allergens and reducing the population. Combined with water, this compound can clean small to large areas via a spray bottle, pump sprayer or deep-cleaning carpet steamer. Popular brands include The Ecology Works DustMite and Flea Control, Aveho and Dustmitex.

    Laundry Detergents/Additives

    • Specialized detergents such as AllerSafe and Allergen wash are designed to neutralize dust mite allergens (feces and eggs), thus controlling the home. Those who look for energy efficiency will be pleased to learn that these detergents are designed to work at all water temperatures. People who are partial to a particular brand of laundry detergent can simply use a laundry additive such as De-Mite.
