Mold & Migraines

Mold is a form of fungi that can be found almost anywhere, and both indoor and outdoor places with high humidity are especially susceptible it. Common mold can be a serious cause of health problems, including allergies and migraines.
  1. Allergies

    • Mold is a common fungus, and fungal infections are a major concern for people with sensitive immune systems. People affected by allergies may be especially sensitive to mold exposure and experience reactions or intensified symptoms. Airborne spores that are released from mold are inhaled into the respiratory system and can cause severe health problems, including migraines

    Symptoms

    • According to the Centers for Disease Control, people who are sensitive to mold can experience symptoms that include headaches, nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, coughing, skin irritation and head congestion. The extent of the allergic reaction depends on a person's immune system, but migraines are commonly triggered by mold allergies.

    Migranes

    • Migraines are very intense headaches that are triggered by external factors like mold. A mold allergy can cause headaches, sinus pressure and painful migraines that result in nausea and dizziness.

    Treating migraines

    • Medications like decongestants or antihistamines are commonly prescribed to reduce and prevent general symptoms of allergic reactions to mold. For intense migraines, doctors recommend placing a cool compress over closed eyes and resting in a dark room. Aspirin can help relieve more intense pain.

    How to avoid migraines

    • The best way to prevent migraines associated with mold exposure is to avoid the fungus completely. While mold occurs naturally in the environment, keeping your indoor living area free of dark, damp spaces where mold can flourish will help reduce your headaches.
