Signs & Symptoms of a Sulphite Allergy

Sulfites are chemicals that extend the shelf life of food, preventing discoloration and browning. They allow foods to look good longer, but produce allergic reactions in some people. A ban went into effect in 1986, prohibiting the use of sulfites in fresh fruits and vegetables, but they are still used in many foods and beverages. Symptoms of a sulfite allergy can range from mild to life threatening.
  1. Coughing

    • The lining of the lungs becomes inflamed causing the airways into the lungs to temporarily narrow. This results in the muscles of the lung wall contracting, producing a cough.

    Difficulty Breathing

    • Sulfur dioxide is a gas produced by sulfites. This gas can trigger a severe asthmatic attack in those sensitive to sulfites. Breathing during an asthma attack is compromised. According to clevelandclinic.org, a person who is asthmatic has between a 1 in 10 and 1 in 20 chance of having an allergic reaction to sulfites.

    Swelling

    • The lips, eyes or mouth can start to swell. This symptom will be noticeable within 30 minutes of eating or drinking something that contains sulfites. If the throat is involved in this swelling, the airways will be restricted.

    Abdominal Pain

    • Abdominal pain can range from slight cramping to sharp, prolonged pain. The pain may be accompanied by nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.

    Dizziness

    • A drop in blood pressure and the resulting shortage of oxygen can cause dizziness and possibly even the loss of consciousness.

    Skin Sensitivity

    • Sulfite sensitivity can lead to outbreaks on the surface of the skin. These eruptions can range from a mild rash to large areas covered in itchy hives. Sometimes the skin will experience a burning sensation.

    Tightness in the Chest

    • The chest may feel like it is being squeezed in a vice. The tightness often makes it difficult to breathe. This symptom mimics some of the same signs as those of a heart attack.

    Anaphylactic Shock

    • Anaphylactic shock is the most dangerous of all the symptoms of sulfite allergy. It may combine some of the other symptoms, such as coughing, hives and chest tightness. It also causes a decrease in blood pressure and shortage of oxygen to the brain. When this is combined with shortness of breath, the result can be fatal.
