Allergies to Rice

As with any food, it is possible for people to have an allergy to rice. Symptoms can run the gamut from mild to life-threatening. If an allergy to rice is suspected, medical help should be sought.
  1. Identification

    • The most common allergic reactions to rice include hives, abdominal discomfort, bloating, vomiting and diarrhea.

    Function

    • When the body identifies a substance as an allergen, such as rice, it produces immunoglobulin E antibodies and histamines to deal with what it considers to be a threat.

    Considerations

    • For some people with severe allergies to rice, symptoms can include a drop in blood pressure, the closing of the throat and breathing troubles.

    Prevention/Solution

    • There is no cure for a rice allergies. The best way to prevent an allergic reaction is to avoid rice and any products that contain rice.

    Warning

    • Some products such as shampoos and lotions contain rice. If you are severely allergic to rice, you will probably have a reaction to these products as well.
