What Are the Symptoms of an Egg White Allergy?

Allergies occur when your immune system mistakes a harmless substance for something more dangerous, such as bacteria or a virus. Hives

• Hives are caused by a skin inflammation that produces red, itchy welts. This is one of the most common allergic reactions to eggs, and is usually triggered when your immune system releases chemicals into your bloodstream upon detecting the allergen. Histamine is usually the main culprit in the development of allergic reactions, and an over-the-counter antihistamine medication is usually enough to relieve discomfort.

Allergic Asthma

• Allergic asthma occurs when your bronchial airways become hypersensitive to the presence of your allergen. It is most commonly associated with inhaled allergens such as pollen and animal dander, but can also occur due to an ingested allergen, such as eggs. Your airway muscles tighten, causing inflammation and an increase in mucus production. This will cause coughing, shortness of breath and a tight feeling in the chest. Prescription medications and bronchial inhalers are helpful for easing the severity and number of asthma attacks due to allergies.

Anaphylaxis

• The most severe allergic reaction is anaphylaxis, and it can be life-threatening. When your immune system releases chemicals to combat the allergen it deems dangerous, it can release too much too fast, sending you into shock. This can lower your blood pressure quickly and cause your airways to narrow, making breathing difficult. Untreated anaphylaxis can result in loss of consciousness or even death, and must be countered by an epinephrine injection as soon as possible. Seek medical help immediately at the first signs of anaphylaxis.
