Mold & Swollen Eyes

Mold is a common type of fungus found throughout our environment. It thrives in areas of high humidity, and places that are warm, damp and dark. Fungus releases mold spores that easily spread in the air, causing eye problems for individuals with sensitive allergies or immune systems.
  1. Allergic Reactions

    • According to the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America, "inhaling the spores causes allergic reactions in some people. Allergic symptoms from fungus spores are most common from July to late summer. But with fungi growing in so many places, allergic reactions can occur year round."

    Allergy Symptoms

    • Mold allergy symptoms are like most other allergy symptoms. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, people with mold allergies can experience "symptoms such as nasal stuffiness, eye irritation, wheezing, or skin irritation."

    Eye Allergies

    • Mold spores can have an irritating effect on the eyes. When foreign bodies such as mold spores get into the eyes, eyes can react with swelling, redness, itching and irritation.

    Treatment

    • Treatments for mold allergies can include medications such as antihistamines and decongestants. For swollen eyes, cold compresses and eye drops help to relieve irritation.

    Prevention

    • It is nearly impossible to avoid all sources of mold, but preventing mold in your living space is the most effective. Maintain good air circulation and avoid dark, damp places.
