Mold & Mildew Poisoning

Mold is microscopic fungi that lives in moist environments. Mildew is a thin growth that is produced by mold. People encounter mold outside every day. In closed off spaces, mold can cause adverse effects in people, including skin rashes, flu-like symptoms and headaches.
  1. Symptoms

    • Symptoms of mildew and mold poisoning include headaches, muscle cramps, fatigue diarrhea, metallic taste in mouth, and sensitivity to light. Not all of these symptoms have to be present for a person to have mold poisoning.

    Complications

    • Certain complications can arise as a result of mold and mildew poisoning. Cancer, seizures, heart attacks and fibromyalgia are less common but possible complications of mold poisoning.

    Treament

    • Mold must be removed from an area so the mold poisoning symptoms will cease. For more severe symptoms, a physician may prescribe something to assist the patient's immune system.

    Other Problems Caused By Mold

    • Mold harms homes, as well as health. Mold and mildew can damage the structural components of a house. Carpet, drywall and fiberboard can all be damaged by mold.

    Prevention/Solution

    • It is important to make sure a house or building is well maintained so rainwater isn't able to get in. Areas prone to moisture should be kept well-ventilated.
