Consequences of Breathing Mold Spores

Mold occurs naturally in the environment. In the outdoors, mold is essential for breaking down matter such as dead trees and fallen leaves. However, mold that occurs indoors is problematic. The EPA states that mold grows indoors when spores land on wet surfaces. All types of mold require water or moisture to grow. Molds produce allergens, irritants and sometimes toxic substances.
  1. Allergic Reactions

    • Inhaling or touching mold or its spores often causes an allergic reaction. Symptoms may include sneezing, runny nose, red eyes and skin rash. The best defense against mold allergies is preventing the mold itself.

    Asthma Attacks

    • Mold may trigger attacks in people with asthma who also have mold allergies. In addition, mold is known to cause eye, skin, nose, throat and lung irritation.

    Preventing Mold

    • Since the main cause of mold growth is moisture, the most important thing is to keep the house dry. If a room is damp, it is best to ventilate it and allow it to dry. Promptly remove wet clothes from the washing machine, wash shower curtains and bathroom tiles regularly and fix leaks both inside and outside the house.
